In response to word that Congressman Dennis Kucinich would be using a
privilege to force a vote on the impeachment of Dick Cheney, Speaker of
the House Nancy Pelosi said there was no way she would allow
impeachment to come to a vote. House Majority Leader Stenny
Hoyer, her second in command, tried to kill the impeachment
resolution. Even the C-Span commentators believed Kucinich would
have minimal support. The shock came when it was seen that, in
addition to the co-sponsors, Republicans apparently fed up with the
misdiraction of the White House voted overwhelmingly in opposition to
the tabling. Pro-Cheney Democrats, frightened that the public
would see them as frauds, started switching their votes. However,
162 stood firm with Cheney. Even House Judiciary Commitee Chair
John Conyers voted against tabling the resolution.
Hoyer, still trying to defeat the impeachment resolution that was
overwhelmingly supported by the public, moved to have the resolution
referred to Conyers' committee. Seeing that Conyers had voted
against tabling, a number of Democrats decided to give him a chance to
prove he could stand with the people. Killing a bill in committee
in the face of 251 members of Congress who want the resolution to come
to a
vote soon on the floor could spell the end of Conyers's career.
Giving him a chance, the final vote on referring the resolution to his
judiciary committee was much closere (218 - 192). Five
courageous Democrats, knowing that the public wanted action now rather
than after war with Iran, stood firm on opposing any committee delay on
the bill. These five were Bob Filner of San
Diego, California, Marcy Kaptur of Toledo, Ohio, Dennis Kucinich
of Cleveland, Ohio, Edolphus Towns of Brooklyn, New York, and Maxine
Waters of Los Angeles, California.
